De los aspectos mas importantes a destacar esta su importancia ecológica ya que descomponen hasta el 12 % de las hojas del bosque, y aun mas destacable es su simbiosis única y casi perfecta con el hongo que producen a lo interno de su colonia, ya que contrario a lo que se piensa comúnmente ellas no consumen las hojas sino mas bien crean un hongo a partir de las hojas que recolectan y esto las convierten en insectos que cultivan.

A pesar del daño que producen a algunas plantas valiosas económicamente el material del hormiguero especialmente los desechos pueden ser usados como fertilizante orgánico de muy buena calidad.
